Hello Copyrights

February 6th, 2006

one thing I’ve learned here in Jordan, don’t be surprised when you see your work being used by someone else without even ask you.

This is a greeting card which I made for one of our clients.. then i found the same illustration is being used in an ad for the printing press which printed the cards. Simply they use there client work without asking… Why not… who cares ya Zalamah?

I know it is really annoying, but heeeey look to the bright side “out of hundred of clients and designs they chose your design :)”

  2. Roba Says:

Oh, my god, that is terrible! I’d feel so annoyed. Did you contact them?

  3. Ohoud Says:

Ya3ni 3aib kteer! this is unbelievable.

Seriously, next time put your copyright sign in a place where it cant be messed with or re-placed. That way some people will not use it as it will appear that is was taken from somewhere and if not at least it will still have your name on it.

    i think you can sue

mmm if the thumbnail sample u posting here is a little bit bigger,, it would be used in public.. h3h3h3 post it anyway, ;)

This is a greeting card from a printing press, who is using your work as an example of their printing projects and not as their own design work.

If they should ask you for your permission in this particular case, you should do the same from all the clients you may present their designs that you did in your design portfolio.

Your portfolio is an advertisement for you as a designer, and their greeting card -with your work on it- is an advertisement for their work as a printing press.

If you do that, then that is out of personal respect and not an obligation, at least not for anyone who may use pirated software, or copy audio CD’s.

What I am trying to say is that it is not worth the accusation.

P.S. I don’t intend to sound aggressive, but rather picky.

Well if you don’t speak up there will be no change in Jordan!

Don’t sue them!I mean you might get people fired….but you should seriously talk to them!
Or at least consult the guys at TAG (Talal Abu Ghazaleh) and they’ll give you their 2 cents about this!

Speak up!Don’t let them get away with it!

Don’t be surprised.. you are living at the Kingdom of Copy&Paste..

  9. Wael Attili Says:

Roba: We did contact them through our printing contractor…

Ohouud: The copyright is for our client and even if put copyrights it will not do good here… This is not the first time that happened to me :) people here do not understand copyrights…

Saqf: If you noticed they removed the client name from the card and they did not display the card in the Ad… They used it as if it was something they did in adobe illustrator; common man does this ad look like a portfolio :)
Dear all, we are not going to sue them of course.. sara7a mesh mestahleh.. but we talked to them because its does not concern only us its concerns our client especially those greeting cards are not being used by our client yet and its going to be really disappointing when people were already saw the graphic.. Now the art work looks like a clipart… Thanks for them

In this case, you do have the right to be upset and blog about it.. I would never use an unfinished work in a portfolio, and this of course applies to your case.

I reacted this way, because many people don’t realise the damage they do to anyone until they are at the other end at a certain point. I am talking about piracy in general.

  11. Wael Attili Says:

Well Saqf am not upset about this whole issue; I was just making a comment on how we deal with copyrights in Jordan.

And let me disagree with you another time; yes I have the right to blog about it to let people know from where this illustration came from before they see it the ad… And am doing it for me and my client… The printing press at least should mention us or our client if they want to do it the right way… this how we present our portfolio.

“Treat people the way you like them to treat you”

Yes you are 100% correct… as much damage they did to me in the first place by using my work… I have the right to remove this damage… we always try to stick to the profession ethics, so we would like other to do so… and also respect that, and without speaking about it no one will understand…
