I’ve just received a link via an email group for a documentary about people who converted to Islam in Texas. The irony is that Texas known to be the home state of the American president George W. Bush and source of Christian fundamentalists.

When I saw this documentary, I had so many questions in my mind. About people who live on the edges of life, people who live in extremes.. the irony of people and beliefs and finally the dramatic changes that is happing around us. Also it made me think about people like us who is standing in the middle and not living at any edge.. does it mean that we are being lost or we don’t have enough believes or what !!! I don’t know

Anyway if you would like to know what am talking about, here is the introduction that you will read on Google video.

“The documentary explores the lives of several Texan families. Muslim and Non Muslim, and their views about Islam and life in the West.

George W Bush may be backed by Christian fundamentalists but in his home state of Texas, Islam is the latest big draw. The Bible belt is transferring its allegiance to the Quran because, for many erstwhile Christians, believe it or not, the church is too liberal.

Eric was a Baptist preacher before he became a Muslim 14 years ago. Now he prays five times a day and even in the middle of watching a football game. His wife, Karen, also a convert, is covered from head to toe in the traditional Muslim burka. Islam, says Eric, is everything I wanted Christianity to be. His mother has found it hard to come to terms with her sons conversion and believes he will return to the Christian faith: Then he will be a dynamic preacher. Eric says: “Maybe some day she will embrace Islam.”

My mother converted to Islam from Christianity after living in Saudi Arabia with my Muslim father for 14 years. I think she had time to see that Islam and Christianity preach the same principals (commandments) and only really differ in the way to believe in God (one vs. three) and who is responsible for one’s sins (in Islam, it is the sinner himself). I also think that most Christians/churches are too liberal - as the article suggests.

I’ve heard the same comments from Muslims who have become Christians. They just can’t do documentaries about it at this point in time in our region.

Liberal.. i want to understand liberalism. is it the tolerance we exhibit to others for wanting to do what they want with THEIR life? is it not the right of a human? Christianity.. is LOVE. Love is tolerance and forgiveness. Forgiveness to all sinners. So the church is a parent. A loving parent who will not abandon their child whether they are gay sinners or abortionists, the sin is great, but the love of God is greater. P.s. I hope you all experience the love of Christ. He is a prophet in your opinion. So i’m sure you can have a personal relationship with Him. A wonderful relationship. He is like a loyal friend who is always asking about you.. so would you ignore that friend?

Wael, I think a convert to any religion is going to have a more ‘edgy’ faith that one born into it. Texas may have more people who call themselves Christians, but how much of their faith is just going through the cultural motions? Jesus said “If you love Me, obey My commandments”. if people aren’t following His teaching, are they truly Christians? Are Muslims who aren’t ’submitted’ to the Qur’an truly Muslims?

I think there is a Baptist preacher’s son who has converted to every religion and even cult along the way. Not to disparage this man’s conversion, but there are alot of Baptist preachers out there.

I am a convert to Christianity from secular American materialism (and witchcraft, I might add). I have experienced the amazing love of Jesus Christ, who truly miraculously redeemed me and made me a completely new person.

this is a good documentary i should say…
i like the fact that it said “revert to Islam”… not convert… revert means coming back to something u already were… and we believe that all children are born Muslims… but then they divert… and by embracing Islam they go back to what they were…
i should say that this video touched me deeply… i was brought up by a Muslim revert myself… who converted/reverted from being a christian brought up in a communist country into a devouted Muslim alhamdullilah…
another thing that caught my attention… one woman said she doesnt know if Muslims believe in God… subhan Allah…
Wael… it is not about living on the edge… but you shouldn’t be common as well… do what everybody else does… and bleive what everybody else believes… be critic about who you are and what you do!!!
it is your own [[personal myth]]… and you have to discover it your self…

    Salam Wael,

Nice documentary, what really interested me were the non Muslims in the movie, when they talked about Islam they proved the fact that say:

“They heard about us, but they never heard from us”

I mean this gap should be minimized some day, by us doing some more work in educating people about true islam in order to spread the concept not to force them into it, being a muslim is a matter of choice only.

Please check this link for a big laugh and some useful info.

    salam alikoum
