Sha3teely in Silicon Valley

October 7th, 2010

I spent the last week wondering around in LA, after a very long trip from Amman. Ill tell you more about it later.

the-social-network.jpg

While am in Palo Alto I had the chance to go and watch the screening of “The Social Network” movie along with some other Jordanian entrepreneurs. The move shows Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg a total Asshole. The story tells you how ugly things can turn between partners… Recommended to be watch.

microsoft.jpg

Anyway, we went on a day trip to visit some leading online companies in Silicon Valley organized by Endeavor. I think it was a really bad to start with Microsoft. We just had a quick presentation about Microsoft TV. I think they need a huge doze of innovation. They became a bit old. If they want to comeback to the race they have to invest in innovation and building creative young team rather than investing in crappy solution and high salary old people.

facebook.jpg

Then we headed to Facebook. The Facebook visit was interesting. Offices are lovely and the community is really young out there.

google_2.jpg

google_1.jpg

We had lunch at Google famous, then we had a really inspiring presentation about Google innovation. At Google you don’t feel that you are in a company.. Its closer to university campus. I liked the environment, but am not used to see large amount of people working together.

ebay.jpg

We ended up the journey with a visit to ebay, we’ve had a brief about the story of ebay and what they do and gonna do.

Finally, I believe that there are no differences between us and companies in Silicon Valley in terms of innovation. The only thing that they have and we don’t have is money and base of users.

This is why it’s really important to increase the base of internet users in the Arab world and increase capitals invested in technology and online sectors. We need to build a brand repetition and a hype around what we do. Then we might see the next Facebook or Google coming out of this region.

March was a plan ride month for me. I was lucky to attend the Abu dhabi Media summit for 2010. It was really a great exposure for Kharabeesh by all means. But

adms_hotel.jpg

adms_panel.jpg

For the first time media, telecoms and web giants get together in one stage to talk about the future of media in the age of technology and data revolution. The scene is very distributive and i felt that everyone is trying to adapt with the rapped evolution and change on how people begin to consume content. Major Arabic media groups are trying to move from being a funded or sponsored institutions into a profitable independent businesses. They also trying hard to understand the new media market and to have a foot there. Telecoms in the region is having a very active role in developing a strategic plans to develop the content market for mobile.

Having said that, paid TV and content in the Arab region failed and became obsolete business. The focus on mobile was very clear. Mobile , mobile, mobile, everyone was talking about how mobile evolved from being a communication tool into a publishing platform for content. The fact that mobile is a guaranteed paid distribution channels with a very high penetration rate in the region made it very sexy for all media groups and production companies.

But regarding the web, it’s still blurry for most of the media dinosaurs who could not figure out how can they control media in this vast growth space. There was no clear business model for them on how to monazite on their content via web. The traditional way of content consumption still controls their minds and they cannot get out of that trap.

On the other hand, telecoms and web technologies are making the most benefit of what is happing. They are having the upper hand over media and this distributive technology made it possible for small companies like Kharabeesh and others to be part of the game. They were successful in changing the media scene and disrupt media monopolies.

Advertising will not be the same again. Advertising is being redefined. Some people are expecting the death of print. While print in india is booming. Others are trying to find a new business model for news. while others are trying to redefine the way we generate news.

adms_rupert_murdokh.jpg

Rupert Murdokh showed a great interest the Arab market. Hans Vestberg, President & CEO of Ericsson predicted that by 2020 there will be 50 billion devices connect to internet all of them require content. Eric Schmidt/Chairman & CEO of Google said it loud and clear “Arabs, write more for the internet”.

Its so clear that content market in the Arab region is hot now. But the question is what? and how? What kind of content do we need? and how can we move from non existence to momentum in a time where content on web is being doubled every two years world wild.

Although there was no smell of any Jordanian media presence, this event did not completely exclude Jordan. In fact Jordan made a unique good presence through its technology leadership and young entrepreneurs. H.E Marwan Juma’a on his panel raised the challenge among these big giants when he talked about the success stories of Jordan’s young entrepreneurs regardless of all the challenges and lack of fund that we face.

I personally believe that media dinosaurs will be out of the game soon. The future for us is by combing technology innovation and creative original content development together, and this is where I see Jordan should be heading. Simply because we have it naturally.

Reflections on Google Arabia 2.0

February 16th, 2010

Google Arabia 2.0 was held last week in Dubai and I was lucky enough to attend such a high caliber assembly. Smartly organized, with a touch of Google creativity and joyful culture. taking advantage of the colorful spaces of the Children City, made the venue by it self a perfect place to imagine the future of Arabia.

Google Arabia 2.0

Early morning, the lobby was filled with CEOs, high officials and decision makers in technology and business from all around the region. But lets admit it, I was a very bad socializer. Such a chance like this needs a really good hunter. Thank to a friend, I managed to catchup with few key people.

Few minutes later I found my self inside the auditorium and the event has started. Mohammed Gawdat, Head of Emerging Markets Counsel at Google, started the day in a very inspirational way by giving us the 9 rules of innovation which adopted and applied inside Google. You can review tweets on #GdayDubai.

Mr. Gawdat highlighted some very harsh realities regarding how much our region is poor in terms of innovation. But he also gave us a good case study on how to build an innovative ecosystem using the Google experience as an example.

After this very inspiring keynote, a two young Jordanian entrepreneurs came out to the stage. The founder of Jeeran.com, Laith and Omar, told everyone their story and the challenges that they faced throughout their entrepreneurial years.

Google Arabia 2.0

After the coffee break, the glory of this event was revealed when the father of the internet started to talk about the future of the internet. To be honest with you my imagination could not keep up with that man in his 60’s. Mr. Vint talked about intergalactic network or internet which he is working on with NASA at the moment!! The only picture I had on my mind is the picture of a dirty hole in the middle of Amman’s street, left out without any proper treatment, and a black telephone cable coming out of the ground.

I felt so foolish.

Then Mr. Hugo Barra , Product Management Director for Mobile at Google, closed the circle by presenting to us the latest innovation of Google mobile products. From voice searching into searching by image capturing. I felt that google is saying to world, the age of startrek begins here and the way we talk to our devices in no longer by keyboard.

After this amazing keynotes we had a 5 minute break. I stood in a very long line of VIPs waiting for my turn to go to the restroom. That was absurd!!

Google Arabia

Then a discussion panel started which was joined by H.E Marwan Juma’a. The panel discuss the efforts made by Jordan,UAE and Egypt to uplift the technology industry in each country. The only messing thing was that I did not see any collaborative efforts or regional vision regarding innovation. I felt that every country is playing solo and they will keep playing solo until further notice.

Once upon time, some Arab guy living in US wanted to search some Arabic terms but he did not have an Arabic keyboard so he created Yamli.com. His name was Habib Haddad. Habib created a new concept of what we call now, the 3arabeezi language..

yamli.jpg

Now google in an extraordinary move brought this concept into their services by introducing a new feature on Gmail, where you can write Arabic words using latin alphabets.

ta3rabozi.jpg

This means that the Arabic language is officially entered a new level of technology and hopefully this tough competition will come up with huge development in Arabic usage over the internet..

Yes Jordan’s IT and creative sector is having a renaissance era, especially after the Maktoob/yahoo deal. More IT startups and ideas are shining up.. big dreams are being drawn and big investors are keeping and eye on what is going on..

But are we blowing pink balloons only?! or are we getting serious enough to take these success stories into a next level..?!!

Next level means that we need to build proper strategies and proper methodologies of supporting innovative ideas and startups in a national scale..

This means that we need to re- evaluate our educational system, engage schools and universities in the process from early stages.. This means that the parliament should keep an eye on what is happing and start providing proper legislation environment..

This means that media should focus more on innovation and small startup, provide the proper support and exposure for them.. This means that big corporate should look seriously into our young creative and innovative minds.. This means that banking and financial sector should move from investing in cement and bricks and start investing on people…

This means that we should move in a national level and stop blowing air “3ala el fadi”.. we need to help and move small /medium businesses from survival mode into more stable situation.. we need to build a place where it can incubate this whole movement.. We need to convert Jordan into the largest innovation and technology workshop… and yes I believe we can.. why not?

Am I too old to be waving!!

October 14th, 2009

Google wave

Google wave is the latest innovations of Google. Basically is it a new generation of sharing experience on the web. Through this platform you can share many things with your friends such as messages, maps, videos, apps and so on.

On Google wave you will find a list of threads. Each thread is called a wave and on each wave you can reply, edit, post links and items. You can increase you sharing capacity by installing wave extensions..

Until now Google wave is open only for invitations and I was lucky enough to get an invitation to try it out “thank you my friend Najeeb”.. Still Google wave did not become part of my online lifestyle but am sure with time Google wave will become an addiction for many online user.

I don’t know if we are going to have a new term called “Wave it man!”

“by the way am out of invitations”
